Getting Your Level 1 Diving Certification: Prices, Organizations, and Tips

Have you ever dreamed of breathing underwater, watching colorful fish just a few feet away, or exploring pristine seabeds? If your introductory dive has inspired you to take it further, (see the article First dive: what to expect?), earning your Level 1 certification is often the next logical step. But is it really worth it? Which organization should you choose for training? And most importantly, how much does it cost? Let’s take a closer look.

Why get your Level 1 diving certification?

Level 1 is kind of like the “driver’s license” of diving. It doesn’t make you a self-sufficient diver, but it does open up a lot of opportunities for you.

Dive safely to a depth of 20 meters

With a Level 1 certification, you can dive to a depth of 20 meters (18 meters for PADI and SSI Level 1), always under the supervision of a professional. That might not seem like much, but in reality, most marine life is found in this depth range. Corals, tropical fish, shallow wrecks… there’s already plenty to marvel at.

Gain comfort and confidence

Unlike a simple introductory dive, the training course teaches you:

  • how to manage your breathing
  • how to equalize your ears
  • how to communicate underwater
  • how to respond to minor problems

The result: you’ll feel much more comfortable, you’ll be able to ensure your own safety, and your dives will become truly enjoyable.

Dive all over the world

Once certified, you can dive at most dive centers around the world. No need to take a beginner’s course every time—you’re recognized as a diver. You’ll then have the opportunity to go on diving trips! Over the course of several days, you’ll go on exploration dives to discover marine life, shipwrecks, protected areas, and new underwater landscapes just waiting for you… sounds tempting, doesn’t it?

A foundation for further exploration

Level 1 is the first step. It does not yet allow you to dive independently; you must still be accompanied by an instructor.

If you get hooked on diving, you can then advance by earning additional certifications or specialize in technical diving.

Which organizations offer Level 1 certification?

Good news: there are several training organizations, all of which are accredited, each with a slightly different approach. The choice often depends on your plans (occasional or regular diving, in France or abroad).

The FFESSM (French Federation)

It is the most widespread organization in France.

Its strengths:

  • Training often takes place at a club, over several weeks or months.
  • A highly structured and progressive approach.
  • Recognized in France and in many other countries.

Good to know:

  • The FFESSM Level 1 certification is ideal if you plan to dive regularly in France.
  • It requires a bit more time commitment.
  • It will allow you to dive to a depth of 20 meters.

PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors)

It is the most internationally recognized organization.

Equivalent to Level 1: Open Water Diver

Key features:

  • Quick training (often 3 to 5 days).
  • Highly practical.
  • Globally recognized.

Good to know:

  • Ideal if you’re on vacation and want to get certified quickly.
  • Many countries offer diving trips lasting a week or less to earn the Open Water Diver certification.
  • Very popular in exotic destinations

SSI (Scuba Schools International)

Another international organization, quite similar to PADI.

Its strengths:

  • Flexible training.
Often a bit less expensive than PADI.
  • Good digital support (apps, online resources).

Which organization should I choose?

In summary:

  • If you plan to dive mainly in France on a regular basis, go with FFESSM.
  • If you want to quickly earn your Level 1 certification and your goal is to dive abroad during your vacations, choose PADI or SSI.

In any case, the skills you’ll learn are similar. The most important factor is the quality of the dive center and the instruction.

How much does it cost to take the Level 1 exam?

That’s THE question everyone is asking—and the answer depends on several factors.

In France

Through a non-profit club (FFESSM):

  • Between €250 and €400 per year (=295 – 472 usd)
  • Often includes: lessons, technical dives, and sometimes the certification

Through a commercial dive center:

  • Between €300 and €600 (=354 – 708 usd)
  • Faster training, often completed in just a few days

Abroad

At diving destinations (Egypt, Thailand, Spain, etc.):

  • Between €250 and €450 (=295 – 531 usd)
  • Often offered as an “all-inclusive” package: lessons, equipment, dives, certification

This is often the fastest and most immersive option.

Additional costs to expect

Depending on the situation, you may need to provide:

  • a medical certificate
  • a license (in France)
  • purchase of basic equipment (mask, snorkel, fins)

Is it worth it?

Yes, without a doubt!

Level 1 completely transforms the experience; you no longer just go through the motions of diving, you truly experience it.

The theory classes teach you the main concepts of diving (pressure, equalization, buoyancy, hand signals, etc.), and the practical sessions make you more independent (even under supervision) and able to handle stressful situations while following safety guidelines.

Finally, once you’re certified at Level 1, you gain access to many more dive sites and can dive deeper (18–20 meters instead of 6 meters for a try-dive).

And most importantly, it allows you to dive regularly without having to start from scratch every time.

La plongée est une expérience inoubliable, de nombreuses choses sont à découvrir : sensation, vie marine, utilisation du matériel, etc... Diving is an unforgettable experience; there’s so much to discover: the thrill of it, marine life, how to use the equipment, and more...

In summary

Getting your Level 1 certification does come at a cost: between €250 and €600 (=295 – 708 usd), depending on the circumstances. But if you loved exploring the ocean floor during your introductory dive, then you should definitely get your Level 1 certification! You’ll learn the essential basics of diving to enhance your safety and enjoyment. Finally, you’ll be able to dive anywhere in the world, and if the idea appeals to you, go on a multi-day diving trip for your vacation.

Whether you choose a club in France or training abroad, it’s an excellent investment if you love the sea and adventure.

If you’re now wondering about the long-term budget, the next logical step is to understand how much a dive actually costs once you’re certified—a topic that can sometimes hold a few surprises…
